Gills Onions Voluntarily Recalls One Lot of Diced Red Onions Because of Possible Health Risk

Real food has its share of issues when large scale production is involved:

Gill Onions has issued a voluntary recall of diced red onions with UPC numbers of 643550 00045 0 in Canada and 643550 00041 2 in the United States.  Not all of the packages with these UPC numbers are included in the recall so the lot number should be checked.  The recalled onions were distrubted to retailers in a 7oz. clear plastic clamshell with Gills Onions label with a use by date of May 17, 2012 and 51RDA1A2119 lot code stamped on the UPC label.    This produst was also sold to foodservice customers in 5 lb clear plastic bags with an expiration date of 5/14/2012 or 5/15/2012, labeled Gills Diced Red Onions , and a lot code 51RDA1A2119 stamped on the bags and boxes. These packages were sold in Canada and several states in the United States including Arizona, Arkansas, Ohio, California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Flordia, and New Jersey.  If you have any of the reclled product you should discard it.
This voluntary recall was initiated as a result of a routine and random test directed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Gills Onions has notified all customers who received the recalled lot directly from the company and requested that they remove from commerce any of the expired product they may still have in stock. As an extra precautionary measure and because we do not always know to whom our direct customers sell our products, we are also asking our direct customers to notify their customers of this recall. Gills Onions is keeping the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency informed of its recall process to assure that consumers are properly alerted.

Eating Real Recipes: Grilled Asparagus and Sweet Onion Soup

April through early June is generally the prime time for harvesting the asparagus variety grown in many CSA gardens.  This year’s warmer temperatures, however, brought out an early crop with the last of the stalks going to seed this past week.  That means this year’s asparagus harvest is over, and only those of us who worked the farm throughout the past couple of months got in on the sweet goodness of freshly picked asparagus.  I love it grilled, but I wanted to make something special to honor my last fresh stalks.  I found a couple of asparagus soup recipes that caught my eye, so I decided to combine the best of both.  What resulted was a soup made from grilled asparagus that was so incredibly delicious I’m already dreaming of next year’s crop!
